SML Blood Sugar Levels to Skyrocket at Best Picture Showcase

It’s that time again! Can you smell the smuggled booze in the air? For the 4th year running (nope, sitting/slouching), SML will be attending the AMC Best Picture Showcase! For a full explanation of the magic, click here and enjoy an Uggie joke. We miss you, doggie!
Saturday’s lineup, “Let’s Get These Two Out of the Way Nice and Early,” is Amour, Les Miserables, Argo, and Django Unchained. Hope you like dead ladies! The body count will be nearly as high as our soft pretzel intake. (Sometimes we wish we were instead going to see Side Effects, then maybe enjoying a leisurely dinner/discussion about Channing Tatum’s ability to veer between lunkhead and cutest-boy-in-your-grade, but that’s OK! We press on so we have more things to shout during our Oscar viewing party, which will be Reform, as usual.)
The Saturday, February 23, lineup patronizes our intelligence with Beasts of the Southern Wild, Life of Pi, Lincoln (Tommy Lee Jones: it’s all led up to this history wig), and Silver Linings Playbook–then we kill Bin Laden and all go home! USA! USA!
Snacking Our Way Through 2011’s Oscar Nominees

This weekend, Serious Movie Lover will be attending the AMC Best Picture Showcase for the third consecutive year. Hooray for tradition! Or ruts! Have you heard of this thing? Every year AMC shows all of the Best Picture nominees (either divided up over two consecutive Saturdays before the Oscar ceremony or all in one day, for the real crazies) in most of their theaters. (Check here for one in your area!) If you love candy, stadium seating, other kinds of candy, introverts, and the delirium that can only come with watching several disparate films in quick succession, this is the event for you! And in between the films, while you are powering up on soft pretzels and a bucket of Sprite, the theater manager often comes out and asks how everyone enjoyed the last film (“Woo!”) and gives out prizes like Jane Eyre bookmarks and Green Lantern T-shirts for correct movie trivia answers. This gets VERY competitive when you have been drinking Sprite all day. It is great!
Tomorrow’s lineup, “Two Traditionally Attractive Men and a Horsey,” features War Horse, Moneyball, The Tree of Life, and The Descendants. The Saturday, February 25 lineup, “Movies We Must Endure So We Can Yell Snide Things During the Oscar Ceremony,” is Hugo, The Help, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, The Artist, and Midnight in Paris. 2011: Year of a Bunch of Duds? Where the hell were the Coens? Should we sneak in flasks on the 25th or what? Maybe that is not the best idea. Never Forget the day we were booted from Creve Coeur 12 for loudly throwing shade at a fictional 9/11 orphan.

As is our tradition (two years running!), SML will be attending the AMC Best Picture Showcase this Saturday and tweeting our every piddly thought. Will an old lady file her nails next to us again? Will we blow our complimentary $10 gift card on Mini Charleston Chews and spend much of 127 Hours doubled over in pain? How many jokes about chow-dah can we make during The Fighter? Happy Oscar Nomination Day, guys! I assume we all started our mornings with the traditional refreshing of our Oscar lawn statues? It’s a good way to get in the mood. So what do you think? I was thrilled to see Winter’s Bone get so much love, particularly the acting nods for tough girl Jennifer Lawrence and the always fascinating John Hawkes (who is long overdue for some red carpet action). I predict a surprise win for him over critical (but not Academy) favorite Christian Bale. Very odd that Ryan Gosling’s work in Blue Valentine was ignored–maybe his outspoken accusations of misogyny in Hollywood (related to the NC-17 controversy) rubbed too many people the wrong way? Keep your mouth shut, pretty boy! I’ll be rooting for Jesse “Cat Lady” Eisenberg for Best Actor because I love an underdog. (And a cat lady.) And a personal thanks to the Academy for nominating The Fighter–it’s good to work at least one nap into the Best Picture Showcase.
Any thoughts on big snubs? Was DiCaprio good enough in Inception to have deserved a nod?
